Azure-winged magpie

It’s been a couple of weeks since I last wrote on the blog, and if you follow me on twitter, you’ll have noticed that we’re back in the UK.  No, that wasn’t part of the plan. Not at all.

We were in Cadiz and about to head over the border into Portugal, when we got a call to say that my Mum was seriously ill. We knew we had to come back to the UK straight away, so the next morning we set off on the most direct route back to the UK.

From Cadiz, we zipped to Plasencia, along roads where we didn’t see another car for an hour at a time. That’s where we saw the beautiful azure-winged magpies, as per the photo above. From Plasencia, we moved to Burgos and then to San Sebastian. All three places looked like they would rank in our Spain Top 10, if we had the time to explore them.

Over the border and into France, we whizzed up to a small village north of Poitiers, then somewhere pretty north of Rouen, and finally to Le Treport, ready for a last dash to Calais.

All in all, we covered about 2500km – from Cadiz to my parents’ – in 6 days.

Now, our adult gap year is having an ‘English phase’ – we’re still camping, but we’re switching between hovering around Lincolnshire to support my Mum and family, and a series of ‘mini-trips’ further afield.

It’s been a tough couple of weeks, but I’m ready to resume the blog – it might not feature as many sunny beach photos as previously, but hopefully we can find some English loveliness to blog instead.
